National Seeds Corporation celebrates Golden Jubilee

National Seeds Corporation (NSC) was established on 19th March, 1963. The corporation has entered into 50th year of its glorious service to the farmers of the nation by providing seeds of high yielding varieties and hybrids. During this journey, the corporation has laid the foundation of a healthy and sound seed industry. At present, the spread of NSC consists of 10 Regional Offices and 77 Area Offices/Sub-Units all over the country. It has processing and storage centers at 43 locations, 5 seed testing laboratories, two vegetable seed packing centres’ and DNA finger print testing facility. It is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company in the areas of production, processing and marketing of seeds. It is also an ISO 14001: 2004 certified company having distinction of a Green company.

Starting as a small organization in 1963, NSC successfully performed the big task to produce paddy seed, for sowing in one Lakh acre area in Kharif,1966 and import and distribution of 18000 tons of wheat seed for sowing in Rabi 1967 and thus registered its presence as harbinger of Green Revolution in the country. Since production of small quantity of maize seed in 1963, present product basket of NSC comprises of nearly 600 varieties of 60 crops. There are about 8000 registered seed growers enabling NSC to take up seed production in best possible agro-climatic zones. Seed marketing is done through own sale counters at over 80 places, strong network of 2800 dealers/ distributors and through State Government organizations. Besides, production and distribution of seeds, NSC has also entered into supply of Tissue Culture Plantlets of Banana and seedlings/saplings of fruits trees.

NSC has contributed its mite in the development of State Seed Corporations in the states and is still contributing by representing on their Board. NSC is helping in development of seed industry in private sector through Central Sector Scheme on “Assistance for Boosting Seed Production in Private Sector” to create infrastructure facilities related to seed processing and storage. Undoubtedly, A lot has been done in this sector but still more remains to be done. Preferences of farmers are changing from varieties to hybrids, which involves seed replacement every year. This enlarges the responsibilities of seed sector and therefore, the preparedness has to be of that level to meet the expectations. Product availability in private and public sector satisfying the need and expectation of the farmers is another critical area. Therefore, Public Private Partnership is going to be quite helpful to confront the challenges facing the seed industry. Considering the potential and resources available with the corporation, I feel the corporation is fully geared to take on these challenges.

The corporation has contributed immensely by helping in the establishment of seed industry in India on scientific lines. The corporation presently enjoys status of Schedule ‘B’ Miniratna Category-I PSU in Agriculture sector with the distinction of largest producer of certified Seed of field crops with a turnover of over Rs. 633 crores. NSC is continuously making profits for the last 10 years and is a dividend paying company since 2006-07. In spite of the achievements made so far, it is high time that in the process of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations at Area offices, Regional offices and at Head office, when all peers and stake holder would be available, the corporation frames up its developmental strategies for the next 10 years with aims and objectives to support the growing needs of the farming community of the nation.

I congratulate, all the employees of NSC, Seed growers, Farmers, Dealers, other stake holders and all the well wishers of NSC, on the occasion of launching of the Golden Jubilee celebration function held at Delhi on 16th August, 2012.
